Wilder Bunch Trail Crew 2024

The Nature Connection eliminates the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. 

Position Description:

The Wilder Bunch is a high school trail crew that builds and maintains biking and hiking trails and bike skills parks in Delta County including the Crossroads Trails in Hotchkiss, the Confluence Park Singletrack in Delta, the Paonia River Park and Jumbo Trail System and the Crawford Montessori Trails. In this position, you will learn skills in construction, wildlife habitat restoration and trail building while riding bikes, planting trees and having fun on the trail. Crew members will gain outdoor leadership skills, confidence in outdoor sports and learn to push themselves physically while acquiring the skills and fundamentals needed to construct hiking and biking trails. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work on outdoor trail construction projects throughout Delta County.
  • Work well on a team of up to 10 crew members.
  • Enthusiastic about working hard and outside.
  • Experience with outdoor activities is helpful but not required.

Qualifications: 

  • Current high school students (under 18)
  • Reliable transportation to/from work sites required
  • Experience with outdoor work–yard work, farm chores, carpentry
  • Positive attitude and excitement to work hard outside in the summer

Application Deadline:  Open until filled; Priority given to applications received by March 18.

Compensation:  Hourly: $14.42-$16/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness First Aid training provided.

Locations: Crews will spend 1-2 weeks building and maintaining trails in each community in Delta County: Crawford, Delta, Hotchkiss, and Paonia.

Commitments: 

  • 30 hours per week
  • Typical schedule is Monday-Thursday, 8-2pm
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 28, 29, 30
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 31 and June 1
  • First Day on the job: June 3
  • Last Day on the job: TBD, but usually around August 9th
