Water Sports Intern 2024

The Nature Connection eliminates the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. 

Position Description:

Cool off this summer as the Water Sports Intern for the Nature Connection! If you like stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), and even if you have never done it, but enjoy outdoor adventures, consider applying to this position. You will be in charge of all our water sports activities for the Nature Connection. This includes supporting our SUP Community Pop-Up Days at Sweitzer and Crawford State Parks and giving instructional support when needed. This position will also help teach SUP basics to kids in summer camps. To prepare for this job, you will be mentored and trained by professional river guides from Western Slope SUP. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys the outdoors and wants to build career skills toward river guiding and outfitting!

Responsibilities:

  • Staff the SUP Community Days at Sweitzer State Park (and occasionally at Crawford State Park) by loaning out gear to the community. This includes collecting donations, administering paperwork, and fitting gear.
  • Organize and maintain the SUP trailer and gear. Inflate and wash the boards, and manage personal flotation devices (PFDs) and paddles.
  • Play a key role in demonstrating how to safely use PFDs and SUPs during our summer camps at Sweitzer.
  • Provide superior client service to all community members, campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers, partners, and vendors.
  • Encourage and inspire campers and the general public when at camps/events.

Qualifications: 

  • Current high school students (under 18)
  • Reliable transportation to/from Sweitzer State Park (and occasionally Crawford State Park)
  • Experience or enthusiasm for working outdoors and on the water
  • Encouraging attitude

Application Deadline:  Open until filled; Priority given to applications received by March 18.

Compensation:  Hourly: $14.42-$16/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness first aid training provided.

Locations: Sweitzer State Park, Delta, and occasionally Crawford State Park, Crawford

Commitments: 

  • 20-30 hours per week
    • Thursdays: 8-11am or 12:30-3:30pm
    • Fridays and Saturdays: 9-6pm
    • Sundays: 9-2pm
    • Other days to be determined: Full-moon floats and other camp days
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 28, 29, 30
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 31 and June 1
  • Training with Western Slope SUP TBD
  • First Day on the job: June 6
  • Last Day on the job: August 4
