What is a Bike Bus?

A Bike Bus is groups of students and adults riding to school together. Kids and families will meet the “bike bus” at a specific location in the morning. See maps for detailed route with approximate times for each school (May 7th, 2026. New maps will be published for Fall.)

Students must ride their own bike or scooter. Helmets are required (we will bring extras!)

Do you want to get involved?

Please use this form to volunteer to lead a bike bus. You don’t have to do it every day. Just set your own schedule and route. We will take care of publicizing it at your school so that other kids can join. Many families want their kids to ride to school, but need the support of an adult to supervise. We also are forging partnerships to make it safer for our kids to ride to school. We are also looking for folks who want to enhance safety around our schools like painting crosswalks or serving as crossing guards.

F.A.Q.

1

Does an adult have to come?

No! If you feel comfortable sending your student alone to meet the "bike bus" and trust your child to follow directions, you do not need to join your child. Younger kids (under 9) and those who are inexperienced riding a bike may want an adult to attend. We highly encourage families to ride together!
2

What happens if we live out of "town?"

Out of town families can either meet the "bus" along the route or (even better!) they can meet at the beginning of each ride.
Delta: 7:30 east end of 7th in Garnett Mesa Estates OR Emeline Store at 7:50 (very short ride for GM, but nice for Lincoln students)
Cedaredge: 7:30 at Pioneer Town Museum/Apple Shed
Hotchkiss: 7:40 at Willow Heights Playground or 7:45 at Delta County Office/North Fork Annex/DMV
Paonia: PK8/Crawford 7:15 at Paonia Care Center or NFSIS 7:45 at PK8 or 8am at La Manzana Bike Shop
3

What happens to my child's bike during school

Each school has a secure location to store bikes during the day.
4

What happens after school?

Due to various afterschool events, Nature Connection is not organizing a return "Bike Bus." Families are encouraged to accompany children home, or have kids return home following the same route. Some schools will allow kids to leave bikes at school for families to pick up later.
5

What safety precautions will you be taking?

Nature Connection leads bike programs at every elementary school for all K-3rd graders. A trained volunteer will have a first aid kit, safety vests and extra helmets. Police departments will be providing an escort to enhance visibility and safety.
6

Do we have to sign up?

Yes! All participants must sign an RSVP and waiver. This will help us anticipate numbers to ensure we have enough volunteers and grab-n-go breakfasts.
7

Why is the Paonia route so long?

The Red Route is for the earlier starting times of PK8 and the Crawford Bus. Out of Town families can meet us at Paonia Care Center at 7:15 and ride to Town Park via Minnesota, 3rd, Delta and 4th. We will depart Town Park at 7:30 and travel to PK8 via 4th and Grand.
The Blue Route is for NFSIS families. Out of town families can meet either at 7:45 in the PK8 parking lot or La Manzana Bike Shop at 8am. The NFSIS ride will depart La Manzana at 8am, travel on 2nd to Onarga to 3rd; travel east on 3rd to Delta Ave. Cross the tracks at Delta (~8:10) and double back on 4th to NFSIS. Hopefully this will give multiple opportunities for all Paonia schools to join the ride
