The Nature Connection eliminates the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. 

Position Description:

Do you imagine a future career in the sciences or working outdoors to help restore and enhance our local forests? Investigate all of the incredible outdoor opportunities available with the US Forest Service by completing field projects and job shadowing with outdoor professionals.

Pathways Opportunity: 

This is an excellent science and research pathway for students interested in majoring in wildlife biology, environmental science and natural resource management. 

4 available internship openings. Designed for students entering 9th grade and up.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in various stewardship and research projects happening on the Gunnison, Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre National Forests
  • Position requires some camping out with fellow interns, supervised by the Nature Connection staff

Qualifications: 

  • Current high school students (under 18)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Enthusiasm to be outside all day and hike 1-2 miles in mountainous terrain. 
  • No previous outdoor experience required, however you must be excited to learn how to live and work in the mountains!

Additional Details: 

  • Interns will be provided all the necessary gear (camping equipment, sleeping bag etc.) and food when field work requires an overnight stay.

Compensation:  Hourly: $14.42-$16/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness First Aid training provided.

Locations: 

Gunnison, Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre National Forests; transportation will be provided.

Commitments: 

  • 30-36 hours per week
  • Schedule is flexible and to be determined but may require some weekend commitments; Specific dates will be communicated before end of school year.
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 28, 29, 30
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 31 and June 1
  • Training will occur in June; 4-6 weeks of field work will occur in late June and July
  • First Day on the job: June 3
  • Last Day on the job: August 2
