Generation Wild Summer Camp Counselor 2024

The Nature Connection eliminates the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. 

Position Description:

Spend this summer outside doing something meaningful and fun with kids in your community! Camp Counselors will help supervise campers ages 7-11, assisting with activities and games outside under the direction of Summer Camp Leads. Whether it’s SUP’ing on the lake, rock climbing, mountain biking, archery or swimming,  we can guarantee your summer won’t be boring! We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and adaptable team members who like being around youth. Experience in outdoor activities is helpful, but not required. Individuals who enjoy working with kids outside are highly encouraged to apply!

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Summer Camp Leads to set-up, supervise, and take-down daily activities.
  • Learn how to safely use and teach youth about outdoor gear and equipment.
  • Learn and help conduct important daily functions of an outdoor summer camp, such as first aid, checking campers in and out, and leading games, activities, and crafts.
  • Provide superior client service to all campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers, partners, and vendors.
  • Encourage and inspire campers.

Qualifications: 

  • Current high school students (under 18)
  • Reliable transportation to/from camp locations
  • Encouraging attitude
  • Ability to adapt quickly and listen to others in a vulnerable, dynamic outdoor environment

Application Deadline:  Open until filled; Priority given to applications received by March 18.

Compensation:  Hourly: $14.42-$16/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness first aid training provided.

Locations: We are looking for Counselors for the following locations:

  • Hotchkiss: 8 week camp June 5-August 9; base camp @ The Nature Connection
  • Delta: 8 week camp June 5-August 9; basecamp @ Bill Heddles Rec Center
  • Cedaredge: 4 week camp June 5-June 28; basecamp @ Cedaredge Middle School

Commitments: 

  • 28-30 hours/week
  • Typical schedule will be Monday – Thursday, 8:30am-3:30pm, with some onsite prep time required on Fridays to prepare for programs
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 28, 29, 30
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 31 and June 1
  • First Day of Camp: June 3
  • Last Day of Camp: August 2
  • Week of July 1-5 off
