Climbing Intern 2024

The Nature Connection eliminates the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. 

Position Description:

Are you excited about climbing and bouldering and want to share this passion with kids in your community? The Climbing Intern will be in charge of supporting our Community Climbing Program including summer climbing club at Cedaredge Middle School, community events at festivals and fairs around Delta County and summer camp as needed. This position will be mentored by our climbing staff and interns will learn the basics of rock climbing, bouldering, climbing wall maintenance and safety to support our summer camps and at community events. This pathway is an excellent choice for students who are interested in future jobs working at a climbing gym or guiding in the mountains.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely set up and break down climbing walls, including the fixed gym wall and the mobile climbing wall.
  • Daily safety inspections of equipment.
  • Interact with the public at community events throughout the County.
  • Play a key role in helping lead climbing activities during our summer camps throughout the community (Cedaredge, Delta, Hotchkiss).
  • Encourage and inspire campers and the general public when climbing.

Qualifications: 

  • Current high school students (under 18)
  • Reliable transportation to/from events and programs throughout Delta County
  • Experience and/or enthusiasm for rock climbing, bouldering and belaying
  • Encouraging attitude

Application Deadline:  Open until filled; Priority given to applications received by March 18.

Compensation:  Hourly: $14.42-$16/hour depending on experience. Free outdoor gear during summer (SUPs, mountain bikes, camping equipment). Wilderness First Aid training provided.

Locations: throughout Delta County

Commitments: 

  • 10-20 hours/week (depending on the week)
  • Mandatory Summer Staff Orientation: May 28, 29, 30
  • Wilderness First Aid Training (if you don’t already have): May 31 and June 1
  • First Day on the job: June 3
  • Last Day on the job: August 11
  • Some weekend work is required
